My Hill
02:36
|
|||
When I was a young boy,
I went up to a hill
And looked on to a spot that
A parking lot would fill.
I knew I would have no say
In whether it was done.
I looked on that spot and
I wish I had a gun.
When I was older
I took her to my hill.
The shopping mart security
Couldn't find us there.
It gave us a big thrill.
Long ago, the family farm
Would've hidden us from the stars,
But yellow weeds & garbage heaps,
Hid us from the cars.
Now I sit on my hill,
In a basement floor machine.
Rich folks laugh,
While the furnace burns,
And this condo sits on me.
Can't see any blackbirds,
Can't see any clouds,
The weeds are gone...
And so is she.
Rich folks choke on billowing smoke.
And I found a new hill.

Lost River
04:24
|
|||
Hush now creature, dry your eyes.
I know a place where a body can hide.
Ooh, I know a place where a body can hide.
Last time I saw you, our table was bare.
If you hurry & join me, I will lead you there.
Sink beneath the water, sink in to the deep,
In a pond just off the road that feeds this muddy creek.
Ooh, in a pond just off the road that feeds this muddy creek.
Though my days are over,
You know where I'll be,
Swim that lost river to me…
Though my days are done,
The waters will always run,
Swim that lost river to me…
Though I'm gone, don't be afraid,
Will meet again on the river someday.
The croak of the frogs will lead you true,
Wear a skirt of greenstone, so I know it's you.
Wear a skirt of greenstone, to drag you to the blue.
Though my days are over,
You know where I'll be,
Swim that lost river to me...
Though my days are done,
The waters will always run,
Find that la-la-lost river… find me!
Lay your head on the river bed,
Drink from the river & find your way to me.
Ooh, rest your head on the river bed,
Drink from the river & find your way to me…
Ooh, lay your head on the river bed,
Drink from the river & find your way to me
Ooh, rest your head on the river bed,
Drink from the river & find your way to me
Ooh, drink from the river & find your way to me
Ooh, drink from the river & find your way to me
Ooh, drink from the river...

Straight at the Sun
04:04
|
|||
It's a dark road, when you walk it alone…
When you walk it alone.
The moon is high,
A hard light casts shadows in the valley tonight
I feel old, when it gets this cold.
I have every reason to stay,
But I gotta be on my way.
The nights get longer and I speak
Lower my head & go straight at the sun
To the fire, to the warmth
It's a heavy load to carry alone, carry alone.
I try to speak, but my voice has gone weak, and I don't recognise the sound.
Now a fire has gone cold as I walk through the woods to the road
The nights get longer and I run
Lower my head go straight at the sun
To the fire
To the warmth
To the fire
Straight to the heart
It's a dark road, when you walk it alone…
When it gets this cold.

No Oath, No Spell
03:32
|
|||
An old crow spoke to me,
Must have lain limp, down the street.
Said we're both tied to our own trees,
Cut me loose, cut me loose.
Saw the deer before it saw me,
It didn't change anything.
His glassy eyes showed me what's to come,
Cut me loose, spare me from this.
Little beast, are you as me?
Left some teeth in your enemies
We won't be broken,
There's no curse we haven't spoken
There is no oath, there is no spell
To deliver us, to make us well.
Old woman, tell me why did you lie…
So long in your hospital bed
With the spark gone from your eyes?
We both know, there's nowhere to go,
Let's cast off, you & I…
Oh, grief, are you as me?
Left some teeth buried in your enemies
We won't be broken
Theres no curse we haven't spoken
There is no oath, there is no spell
To deliver us, so help
Cut me loose, I wish you well
No oath, no spell…
No prayer & no hell but the one we made.
Let's cast off, turn tail.

I Came Around
04:35
|
|||
Cars lined up the street
A procession for the thief
The men were restless and the women howled
As they professed their grief
A smoke was lying on his lips
And in his hand a rusty flask
Even in death he'd forced a smile
I oughta give him his dues for going out like that
When you've walked through the valley
Saw the face of death
And you've paid your debts
Well then, is there anything left
Is there anything left
When you've settled up
Is there anything left
I came to pay a false courtesy
So you couldn't get the best of me
But the grief hung in the air and mingled with the sweat
I presumed to know your inner workings, but I just guessed
I never thought much about the man
He was always just drifting along
But a couple hours in
We were drunk as sin
I was wrong, I was wrong about him
I came around, I came around, I came around
I took you for a hanger-on
But the way those folks all wept
You must've been doing something right
To move the company you kept
The drinks kept coming and I loosed my tongue
And I talked a little shit
But your friends just laughed and chimed right in
Telling yarns so good it made me quit
I never thought much about the man
He was always just drifting along
But a couple hours in
We were drunk as sin
I was wrong, I was wrong about him
I came around, I came around, I came around
I came around, I came around, I came around
The room started reeling
I got the feeling I read you wrong
Then another bottle of gin
Break out the bar brawl again
You were the reason for them
By the time the sun was at its feet
Everybody there was pissed
And I can say with some degree of certainty
The old bastard will be missed
I thought your life was nothing more than one long grift
Now I sit weeping by your coffin
Clutching a bottle in my fist
I came around, I came around, I came around
I came around, I came around, I came around
I came around, I came around, I came around
I came around, I came around, I came around
I came around, I came around, I came around
I came around, I came around, I came around

Hard World
03:37
|
|||
Just barely 20 with a slight frame
And a hunger for something that I couldn't name
I went runnin', I went runnin'
Running barefoot into the night...
I got hair the colour of a silk worms dream,
The prettiest little thing that you ever did see.
They come runnin', they come runnin'
Anything they can do, they clamour for me.
Ooh, it never changes.
But we carry the weight with us.
Ooh, it's a hard world.
It all seemed like such a long time ago,
They buried my story when they filled in that hole.
Nobody runnin', nobody runnin'
Nobody trying to explain.
I wanna wake in the woods beside the lake,
Just resting my head, in some moss covered glen
Ooh, it never changes
But we carry the weight with us
Ooh, it's a hard world
Motor oil colored hair & a white t-shirt,
Now tan, from the rust & the dirt.
Nobody calls for me,
Nobody hunts for me,
They don't seem to know I'm gone.
The other girls and me,
Resting under this tree,
Are green with envy at the attention you draw.
Ooh, it never changes
But we carry the weight with us
Ooh, it's a hard world
For the little things
A hard wold, ooh
A hard world
For all the lost girls.
Remember me, remember me
Underneath this lonesome, awful tree
Let the roots & soil drink of me
Whispering leaves & pointing branches will tell them where I'm lying...

Ditch Lilly
03:22
|
|||
Ditch Lily, sittin' by the road,
Dead still and your head hung low.
Oooh, shall I take you home?
Pick you up put you in my lapel,
If I carry you, I have to leave a piece of myself.
I followed you down to the old cove
Caught you drinking up the moonlight,
From the dark, ohh Lilly
When I picked you from the bunch,
You weren't the prettiest I ever seen,
But next to the road, you're a goddess, you're a queen
You were made incomplete
You were made for me
You were made incomplete
You were made for me
I twisted and I shaped to you, to my need, oooohh Lilly
You're a grass blade tossin' in the wind,
barely clinging to the ground.
You're a circus barrelin' through some forgotten town
You have a violence
Chills me to the bone
A fire inside of you that no one's seen
and no one knows.
You were made incomplete
You were made for me
You were made incomplete (you look so pretty)
You were made for me (better than the graves
You are made for me

The Curse of Elkhart
02:50
|
|||
A curse has laid o'er this wretched land
Most of the folks here don't give a damn.
Should I bide my time or start the fight?
Wait for the sound of drums pounding in the night.
Ah ah ah ah,
Sit down for a spell,
Have i got a story for you.
One that the old folks tell,
Would you believe it's true?
Whether god is great, or the folly of man,
The faithful & the fools all have the same plan.
Wait for something to happen
So they don't have to act.
Cowards & zealots running in the same pack.
Sit down for a spell,
Have I got a story for you.
One that the old folks tell,
Would you believe it's true?
Ah ah ah ah
The lakes are boiling,
The rivers, swell.
Spirits are restless
Can't you hear them yell?
Ah ah ah ah ah ah

Ramblin'
03:12
|
|||
I go where the green woods grow,
When the fires light the night,
You know I've been a-ramblin'
Steam pours off the frigid pines,
Weaves through mountains, took my time
I've been a-ramblin'
I've been a-ramblin'
The land is ripe, but the people leave,
The gods still feel like they're cutting' their teeth
I watch them as they grow,
(Will they change?)
I don't know
I've been ramblin'
I've been a-ramblin'
I-I-I got nothing to lose
I-I-I've got nothing to lose
I was there when the dark age in Europe, a barrel of the plague
I've been a-ramblin'
I've been a-ramblin'
The cockroaches will inhabit the cities if they fall,
If there's one on the outside there's ten in the wall
I've been ramblin'
I've been a-ramblin'
I-I-I've got nothing to lose, no where to be, nothin' to do
I've got nothing to lose
You best lock her up if your wise, I put that gleam in her eyes
I've been a-ramblin'
I've been a-ramblin'

Go to the Light
03:40
|
|||
A lonesome star, in a bitter sky,
I hear the hungry ghosts calling out in the night,
Just a couple victims of this brutal reprise,
Am I strong enough to let things just die?
I fight & I fight,
Just to keep the spark alive.
But if there's nothing on the other side,
Why can't I leave well enough alone & go to the light?
Go to the light,
Go to the light.
A shadowy hand turns the page,
A dark theatre, move across the stage.
Teeth like a cone, scrape against the sky.
Feelin' alone in room full of life,
Stealing a few extra moments
And fighting against time.
Pushed on and pushed aside,
I've changed my song to match each story,
I've changes sides.
Can i watch 'em as they fall,
When they finally try to stand,
Redeem myself for everyone I've buried with these hands?
I fight & I fight,
Just to keep the spark alive.
But if there's nothing on the other side,
Why can't I leave well enough alone & go to the light?
Just let it die (Go to the light),
Just let it die (Go to the light),
Just let it die (Go to the light),
Just let it die (Go to the light),
Just let it die (Go to the light),
Just let it die (Go to the light),
Just let it die (Go to the light),

Oh, to be an Animal
03:00
|
|||
Skies were blue,
Pretty too.
But the ache in my chest,
Just made it seem cruel.
Oh oh, oh oh,
It's the loneliest of times.
They say I,
Climbed the stairs,
Walked up the hill,
And had to catch my breath.
Your old house, hadn't changed at all,
Oh, to be an animal, scurrying through those halls.
Oh oh, oh oh,
It's the loneliest of times.
You were a lion, I bared my throat for you.
I was your songbird, chirpin' out a tune.
A fool, a fool...
Back home,
Over due.
Walked on the irons,
Just to get to you.
House is alive with music & lights.
Oh, to be a mirror inside, to catch the sights.
Oh oh, oh oh,
It's the loneliest of times.
Oh oh, oh oh,
It's the loneliest of times.
Oh oh, oh oh,

Ghost Fields
04:01
|
|||
A dark wind, come from the fey.
Blew under her skirt, and took her away.
And now that she's gone, the land seems to change.
Lights on the hills, have never looked so strange.
I pass by these houses, all out of the way.
A lot of my friends came from here,
but none of them still live here today.
As I walk alone
through the ghost fields that remain
down the barren roads
i recall your ways
She bends with the winds and he shifts like sand.
I try to explain, but I'm not an eloquent man.
She bends with the winds and he shifts like sand.
I try to explain, but I'm not an eloquent man.
Do you understand?
This girl, this boy,
They were part of the land.
What happens to the places we used to tend?
She's a hard one to trust,
And he's a roving ghost.
Will you come back, will you come back,
Or leave me alone?
Sons, sons,
Full of anger & steam,
Will you find what you were searching for,
Or did you bury the dream?
Daughters, daughters,
Return to the fold.
Will you come back, will you come back,
Now your children are grown?
She's alive, she's alive,
A stone floating upstream
He was the pale rider on a dark horse in a coal black dream...
